Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a cosmetic operation designed to re-contour the lower eyelids by removing and repositioning skin, muscle and fat. Surgery will change the appearance of the lower eyelid and produce a natural-appearing eyelid, with a more rested and youthful appearance.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is an increasingly popular procedure for both men and women. With increasing age the prominence of the lower eyelid fat pads becomes more apparent. Often patients with especially prominent lower eyelid bags will have family members with a similar facial contour. A lower eyelid blepharoplasty is an excellent procedure to change the shape of the lower eyelid.

Modern lower eyelid blepharoplasty is performed both on the inside and outside of the eyelid. A transconjunctival incision is made on the inside of the eyelid to remove the protruding orbital fat. Extra skin and muscle are removed from beneath the eyelashes. If needed, the lower eyelid can also be tightened at the time of surgery to prevent a postoperative eyelid retraction. The transconjunctival blepharoplasty is the state-of-the-art technique utilized by an increasing number of cosmetic surgeons across the country. This technique eliminates many of the complications traditionally associated with an old-fashioned transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty.
